The FIRM: Slim & Trim Powerball Kit Review

The FIRM: Slim & Trim Powerball Kit
Tina Smalley, 2008

This is a 40 minute functional fitness workout led by Tina with 4 background exercisers, Emily provides the beginner modifications. The set is the darker marble-esque floor w/ a grayish blue background. You will only need the ball for this workout. The dvd comes with a 4 lb pink med ball. The dvd also has a 20 minute express w/o on it.

I like this workout used as a functional fitness type workout. I was still a bit sore from my last strength w/o so I did it this today and it was a perfect fit. There is some lower body body-weight work (+ the 4 lb ball) and some UB "work" w/ the ball (4 lbs is just not heavy enough to really do much IMO). You will do a lot of multi muscle moves that will get your heart rate up -lunges and dips while chopping the ball and raising it overhead, full form squats, squats w/ an upright row, side lunges with a bicep curl, a bowling type squat, fencing lunges, etc.

The w/o really has a functional feel IMO-like i said a lot of multi muscle moves with light weight. A lot of core focused moves: twisting, chopping, etc. There are also some touching the floor moves, pushups w/ one hand on the ball, "gorilla walks" while in plank, and other "functional" type moves.

The cardio is good in this one. More challenging and heart pumping than a lot of the "pink" Firms. Some toe taps on the ball, plyos, jumping squats, side steps, and a lot of the lower body work also gets the heart rate up.

I would rate this a solid intermediate workout with the option to up or down the intensity pretty easily. I wouldnt consider it a strength w/o though. I like Tina as a lead-her cueing is lacking a bit but its all pretty straight forward and athletic so not too hard to follow. She does "whoo" a lot in this and there is a few bad camera angles and you can hear their shoes clicking, but I still like the w/o and should use it more

Gaiam: The Firm 500 Calorie Workout Review

The Firm: The 500 Calorie Workout
Kelsie Daniels, 2008

This is a 60 minute AWT w/o led by Kelsie w/ 4 background exercisers. Tina shows the beginner modifications. The set is one of my favorites-hardwood floors w/ the (fake) city backgound view from the windows. Kelsie uses one set of (5 lb) dumbbells but I used a variety; you wont need any other props for this w/o.

Kelsie alternates cardio and AWT strength segments thourghout this dvd. The sets are a nice length, so youre not switching up every few mintues, which I like. The pace is quick in this one so it was hard to use my typical Firm-heavy weights, I heavied up as much as possible and I am quite sore today! Kelsie does not waste any time in this one, but I didnt feel rushed or lost at all.

Her cardio is straightforward and athletic (love) w/out being boring or repetitive. She builds in intensity so its easy to amp up throughout or keep it lower intensity if you choose. You will see jacks, shuffle, grapevines, front & back V-steps, ham curls, etc. She puts fun spins on some typical hi-lo moves to really keep the w/o moving along and fun.

Her strength moves are all multi muscle and I found myself not able to go quite as heavy as I would have liked, but like I said-I am feeling it today so had I heavied up-I would probably have regretted it today! She combines a lunge with a bicep curl, squats with clean and press, side lunges-setting down the weight and picking it up, etc. What I really loved about her strength segments was that my heartrate really didnt drop at all.

She closes with a standing ab section that is used to cool down before you go down to the floor for more ab work and lying chest and tricep work.

I would rate this a higher intermediate- it is more challenging than most of the newer pinnk Firms. I really enjoyed this w/o and though its 60 minutes-I wasnt clock watching AT ALL! The time flew by and I was drenched with sweat by the end. Kelsie really makes the most of your workout time here.

Eden Fantasys Shout Out! (Possible Adult Content)

Potential adult content below! Proceed at your own risk.
But dont worry, nothing too risky and is all presented with utmost taste.

Eden Fantasys is an adult novelty store that sells beautiful lingerie in a large array of sizes (including plus sizes), adult toys, massage oils, gift cards, sexy and fun Halloween costumes, and dvds. They offer FREE shipping on orders over $59.00! There are also user reviews of their products and discreet shipping.

My joint venture blog Win, Lose, or Blog was lucky enough to have Eden Fantasys sponsor a prize for one of our winning contestants or comment "cheerleaders"! We thought that a cute piece of lingerie for a winner would be a nice way to celebrate the loss of some unwanted pounds! Thank you Eden Fantasys for your generosity!

Their marketing gal that I corresponded with was more than pleased to sponsor Win, Lose, or Blog. Because she is also a BIG LOSER! She has transformed her body and is living a healtheir, happier life and was very excited about seeing other women out there do the same!

Eden Fantasys was generous enough to donate a $50 giftcard for lingerie or any of their other exciting products to Win, Lose, or Blog AND they sent me this cute corset top to review! I'm not sure who was happier to see this package arrive, DH or me...

Now unfortunately it doesn't look exactly like that on me LOL, but its still super cute and very flattering! The black bands that go down the torso have a thin but sturdy strip inside to help control the tummy! Always a plus in my book!

It is made of high quality cute and comfortable red fabric with a black lace overlay and trim. The back is completely lace up with a nice black ribbon but it also has a side zipper, so putting it on is super easy! The lace up back really allows for a custom fit. I am very impressed with the quality fabric and lace and the price! This beautiful corset top is only $57.99 at Edens Fantasy here.

They are running a fantastic lingerie sale right now. Their everyday low prices are 20% - 40% off! They have some really cute pieces along with some nice undies.

And I cant not post this: Hello Kitty Pocket Vibe. LOL this little cat really gets around, doesnt she...All this for only $29.99.

Another product catagory that Eden Fantasys offers, is sexy Halloween costumes! I looked for a female cop costume last year because DH went as a prisoner, but the only one I could find was about $75.00 (I went as Hello Kitty instead). So I was pleasantly surprised to find this cute little number at Eden Fantasy's for only $37.04!

Eden Fantasy's has some giveaways going on right now on some blogs that I follow. Head on over and enter to win:

  • Win, Lose, or Blog is giving away prizes just for commenting and following along during season 1. The $50 Eden Fantasy giftcard could be yours...

Prevention Drop it in 30! Review

Prevention Drop it in 30!
Chris Freytag, 2006

This dvd has two 20 minute cardio workouts on it. Both workouts are led by Chris with 2 background exercisers, one shows the beginner/ low impact modifications. The set is bright and open with colored glass in the background. You wont need any equipment for this workout. There is also a seperate warmup, cooldown, and some bonus tips in another section.

The first workout "Fat Burning" is pretty good and the choreo is pretty simple. She says she starts with a funcitonal (basic cardio move) and then adds a dance flair. That turned me off at first, but its really not dancy. A fitness dance lover would probably be dissapointed but being a non dancer I was happy that the moves were basically a basic cardio move w/ a bit of flair added to them. If you are not a fan of TIFTing (take it from the top), you may not like this. She does a move, adds a move, repeat, add, repeat, etc. I am not a TIFTer but this one flowed well and was fine and not overly repetitive IMO.

The second workout "Metabolism Booster" was more my cup of tea-athletic moves- with higher intensity intervals mixed in. She does a lot of sporty moves (soccer kicks, shooting the basketball, etc) then adds in the higher intensity bursts (shuffling back and forth, fast feet, jump rope, etc). I really like this workout and worked up a nice sweat and certainly burned some calories here. I did add in a lot more arm movements and ploys & I wore weighted gloves but with those mod's I got a GREAT workout!

These workouts adapt well to the rebounder (metabolism booster in particular), and are easy to modify up (or down) to suit your needs. If you are on the lookout for a short cardio workout-this is a good choice. Chris is a good lead, maybe a bit too smiley, but otherwise good and cues well. Simple choreo but not boring. Good vareity in a short amount of time.

Stephanie Huckabees PowerFit Harmony Lower Body Review

PowerFit Harmony Lower Body
Stephanie Huckabee, 2010

PowerFit Harmony is a 10 dvd set that includes 3 bands & literature. All the workouts are 20 minutes & led by Stephanie with 2 background exercisers. I really LOVE the set. Its a very nice open room with cute decor around the edges-if I were rich, this would be my dream home gym :) They utilize an exercise band and thats all you will need! These workouts has a real Firm feel to them-which is a huge plus in my book! The intensity for me seemed to fall between the original PowerFit workouts and the Firm 6 pack workouts- a lower intermediate/ high beginner intensity. But you can choose your band so you can up the intensity of the strength w/o's.

Lower Body Blast: This is a 20 minute lower body band workout led by Stephanie with 2 background exercisers. The set is awesome-open and inviting. There is a warmup & cooldown included in the 20 minutes but besides that it is nonstop lower body band work! I really upped the intensity here by adding a 20# weighted vest to the band work and I will definately feel it tomorrow-this impresses me because I would normally be using two 20# dumbbells for LB work, so w/ only 1/2 the poundage + the band and in ONLY 20 minutes-my LB was sufficiently worked!

Stephanie starts with some band squats and goes into a nice leg abduction-which you can make more challenging by using the band on the leg youre lifting, a close stance squat, some fast tempo squats, running dips, crab walk type squats w/ the band, pliets, and walking lunges. Before the cooldown she does some table floor work. I added ankle weights and really felt the burn here! Done as is: I would rate this a low intermediate/ high beginner w/o. BUT I got a high intermediate w/o w/ the above mod's.

Review: Amy Dixon Give Me 10!

Review: Amy Dixon Give Me 10!
Amy Dixon, 2009

Amy works out with 2 background ladies in a nice open set with wooden floors; one of the b/g'ers shows modifcations. Amy used only 1 set of dumbbells, you can stick w/ one set (which actually works out pretty well because she has the moves designed to fit the same poundage IMO) or you can use a variety. You can "play all" or play individual segments but there is no "mix and match" option.

The dvd is comprised of six 10 minute sections: cardio, UB, LB, yoga/stretch, abs, and a bonus kettlebell workout (using a KB or dumbbell). She dosent waste any time in each 10 minute segment- you start right into the moves and at the end she tells you to do another segment, use the yoga/ stretch segment, or cooldown on your own.

Core Makeover:
This is a weighted core workout utilizing one dumbbell. This segment felt kettlebell inspired to me though I am no KB pro. A lot of the moves are done standing (which I love) such as, weighted chop and windmill w/ the weight. Then you go down to the floor for some fun & unique "rock & roll" plank moves, reverse curls, knee drops, side planks w/ a twist, and she includes lower back swimmers-I enjoy working the often overlooked lower back.

Lower Body Firmer:
Using one (I used 2) sets of dumbbells you start with a basic squat and move into a kettlebell-esque swing & 1 arm swing w/ the dumbbell. I was already feeling it (I used 15#ers) by the end of this squat section! Then we move onto a lunge & lunge variation sequence. Then we move onto a dip sequence, deadlift variations, one legged squats, and pliets. She adds a unique twist to most all the moves and shows some progressions to keep it interesting.

Upper Body Sculpt:
You start right away with a weighted upper cut, move on to bicep curl variations and then down to the floor for tricep dips. Then you do a back fly with an added balance challenge, a lat raise w/ a swing, overhead press, plank with a front dumbbell raise, and of course pushups.

Fat Blasting Cardio:
Amy keeps this cardio straightforward and athletic (just the way I like it!) while getting/keeping your heart rate up there nicely. There is an unweighted squat and lunge sequence, mambo, step ball change, skaters, shuffle, jacks, a FUN basketball (I love sports inspired cardio-though I am not a fan of actual sports LOL), and she adds in plenty of plyos and jumps to get the heart pumping.

Bonus Kettlebell ToneUp: This workout is comprised of pretty basic kettlebell moves but it was def 10 minutes well spent! You will do squats, "monkey", Russian twists, halo, a squat w/ halo and a chop, and a rack and press w/ a plyo squat move. You finish with a basic swing. I used a dumbbell, as does one b/g exerciser. Amy uses a kettlebell.

I like Amy as a lead and would really enjoy having this w/o in my collection. She really put thought into designing this w/o- when a heavier weight is needed, she has you put both weights in one hand.  Unlike many other weight or AWT w/o's where the poundage doesnt match up w/ the move or you do a joint move and one muscle group suffers, she has it planned out very well. Her personality and cueing are both good! I would rate this a solid intermediate that you can easily modify up or down.

The FIRM: Supercharged Sculpting Review

The FIRM: Supercharged Sculpting
Pam Cauthen Meriwether, 2005

This dvd originally came with the TransFirmer (TF) set. It is a 40 minute all sculpting workout led by Pam with 4 background exercisers. Alison provides the beginner modifications. You will need your TF and a range of dumbbells. This is a fun workout and the time really flys. I couldnt believe 40 minutes had passed when she started the stretch this AM. The dvd also has a bonus 8 minute stretch w/o on it.

After a nice warmup and brief stretch Pam moves into lower body work that includes lunges onto the incline, squats, leg press, and tall box climb. She also does a dip segment where you have the 6 inch section of the TF behind the blue section. You dip off the green section and tap your toe onto the blue section.

After the lower body set you move into some ab work and then start on the upper body work. She does some lying upper body work -pec fly w/ variation, ribcage pullover etc. Then you do some clean and press, overhead press, bicep curls, lat row variations, tricep kickbacks, tricep dips, etc. After the upper body work you close with another ab section that includes plank & side planks. Then you move right into your stretch.

I would rate this a solid intermediate w/o but you can easily use heavier or lighter weights to fit your needs or change the intensity. She goes slow enough to accomodate heavier weights but she does move along between exercises quickly.

Kelly Coffey Meyer: 30 Min to Fitness Bootcamp Review

30 Minutes to Fitness: Bootcamp
Kelly Coffey Meyer, 2009

This dvd has two <30 minute bootcamp (cardio and strength) workouts and a bonus <20 minute stretch workout. The dvd is chaptered very well and you can choose from warmup, workout 1, workout 2, stretch, or premixes. Under premixes you have a 55 min w/o that includes the w/u, both bootcamp w/o's and a c/d; a 30 strength only premix; a 30 minute cardio only premix; and a 22 minute stretch that includes the w/u and bonus stretch. You will need a variety of dumbbells. Kelly works out w/ 2 background exercisers in a smallish set with some posters in the background.

The warm up gets right to the point-which I like. You will do some jacks, jogging, marches and plyos to get you ready for the workout. Both workouts come in under 30 minutes and utilize mostly medium weights. You do a lot of multi muscle moves so you cant really heavy up. But by the end of the w/o my muscles were plenty worked from repetitions. For example, you do a dip w/ a lateral raise. So I used 10s w/ Kelly-while my LB wasnt feeling it my shoulders sure were! The format is 2 minutes of strength and then 2 minutes of cardio.

The cardio is all athletic type moves put together into little routines. They arent hard to follow but not as simple as the Firm choreo. Im sure you all will do just fine w/ it. Lots of plyos interspersed w/ lower impact moves so your HR gets way up there but you also get a little "break" (if you want to call it that) while your HR stays up. I was drenched in sweat by the end! She includes jacks, plyo lunges, mock jump rope, flying heel tap jacks, a baseball drill, a basketball drill, knee pulls, marching, and other fun but tough moves.

The strength is multi muscle and includes a few kettlebell inspired moves like a side lunge w/ a knee up and a swing type move w/ the dumbbell. Weighted plyo squats, push ups, walking planks, knee pull planks, squats with clean and press, curtsey dips, etc.

I didnt do the bonus stretch w/o but Kelly works out alone on the same set.

I would rate this a high intermediate workout that could easily be modified up or down. One b/g exerciser shows beginner modifications. I like Kelly though feel her cueing could be a tiny bit better. Too many of the moves are quite similar but combined in different ways, so for the choreo challenged like me-better cueing could have saved me (the tiny) bit of confusion I had. She has a good personality and energy and I am interested in trying more from me. I am a huge fan of "bootcamp" w/o's and this one DID NOT dissapoint! Great w/o with tons of premix options. I received this DVD to review.

The FIRM: Fat Burning Sculpting Ball Workout Review

The FIRM: Fat Burning Sculpting Ball Workout
Tina Smalley, 2006

This is a 30 minute AWT workout led by Tina with 4 background exercisers, Alison shows the beginner modifications. This dvd was originally released with a 4, 6, or 8 lb soft weighted ball; that is the only prop you will need for this workout

After a nice warmup using the ball you move right into the first sculpting set. I use an 8 lb ball for this workout and while I can feel my lower body getting worked using my body weight + the 8 lb ball, you cant really work the upper body too well. After the strength segment you move into a good little cardio segment. I enjoyed the cardio in this one and it did get my heartrate up. There are plyos and you can modify up the lower impact moves if you want to kick it up a notch. After some standing ab work you finish with a floor strength segment that includes ab/core work and some bridge work.

Tina uses the ball alot in this workout and finds fun ways to incorporate it into the workout making this a fun and unique workout. Its great for a day when you are maybe a little sore from your last workout but want to get some strength work in with your cardio. I was thinking of adding it to an UB w/o to get full body strength and cardio in 60 minutes. I would rate this a solid intermediate w/o that you can easily modify up or down to suit your needs.

Jillian Michaels: The Biggest Winner- Cardio Kickboxing Review

The Biggest Winner- Cardio Kickboxing
Jillian Michaels, 2005

This is a 20+ minute cardio kickboxing workout led by Jillian w/ 6 background exercisers (3 male, 3 female) in a nice gym looking room. The set looks very similar to George Foremans set in his walking w/o's. You wont need any props for this workout.

After a nice active warmup you move into a basic kickboxing workout-nothing fancy, pretty straightforward and athletic but not boring or too repetitive IMO. She does most moves in sets of 10, then moves onto the next move. You will see speedbag, shuffle, side kicks, roundhouse, front & back kicks, jabs, upper cuts, cross, jumping jacks, fast feet, and other "athletic" kick/boxing type cardio moves.

Jillian is a bit giggly in this one, like shes trying to tone down her "tough guy" persona-but it doesnt really work on her. Its not that bad, but it just isnt "her" IMO. She does still try to act tough w/ the background exercisers on occasion.

I bought this dvd after having done her newer workouts (30 DS, BFBM, NMTZ) and was a bit disappointed-while its a good workout-the intensity was nowhere near the same as her newer workouts. Having said that-its a good little basic kickboxing workout. I would rate this workout a lower intermediate workout. Its perfect to tack onto a tough cardio workout or to use on a light day. I wore weighted gloves and still wasnt real challenged by it.

The FIRM: Power Sculpt Review

 The FIRM: Power Sculpt
Allie Del Rio, 2006

This 20 min dvd is led by Allie in an open room with white brick walls, foggy windows, and hardwood floors. There are 2 Firm instructors as background exercisers. No beginner modifications are shown. It is all sculpting, no cardio, but some of the moves can provide a cardio effect. It moves right along and the 20 minutes really fly by.

This dvd comes packaged with a 9 lb bright green weighted body bar that can be screwed apart to make 3 smaller 3 lb bars. I bought the dvd used without the bar and just used my old 8 lb Firm sculpting stick. Because the 8 or 9 lbs is really not enough weight to do much I did the following things to up the intensity of this one: I wore my 20 lb weighted vest, 1 lb weighted gloves, and attached my 2 lb pink Firm weighted balls to my stick. At the end I even put on my 2.5 lb ankle weights (yes Im sure I looked hilarious!). With all these additions I could actually feel my muscles being worked very well and my heartrate did get up.

Allie goes through a series of lunges, squats, bicep curls, shoulder work, tricep work, and some lying inner and outer thigh work before she finished with some ab work and a stretch. Keep in mind this is only 20 minutes and you are supposed to be using a 9 lb bar so dont expect to be feeling a whole lot by the end if done as is. But you can easily just use dumbbells instead of the stick, a heavier stick, or do what I did and add all sorts of crazy equipment.

Allie cues well and does a great job leading this workout. I would rate it as beginner or low intemediate because of the weight of the stick. I actually really enjoyed this workout. If I had a 20# or heavier bar, this would really be a great 20 minutes spent.

Sharon Mann: The Works Cardio Review

Sharon Mann, 2002

This is part of Sharon's Mann The Works set. The dvd is customizable and you can create your own workout. There are also a few premade workouts already on the dvd.

You choose 1 of 4 warmups (step, hi-lo, etc), then you choose 1 of 8 "cardio one" segments (athletic step, interval, hi-lo, low impact, etc), then you choose 1 of 8 "cardio two" segments-these are different from the "cardio one" options (step, bootcamp, boxing, kickboxing, etc), then you choose 1 of 4 cooldowns (tai chi, athletic, yoga in a chair, etc). These all go together to create your own 30 minute workout. Some of the interval or bootcamp segments have strength moves in them as well as cardio.

The segments are taken from Sharon's old exercise TV show. When a commercial break is up you see a blue screen with a motivational saying on it (Way to go!, Keep it up!, etc). It is brief and doesn't bother me at all.

There are 4 background exercisers. Two show advanced options and two show low impact options-and don't use a step in those segments. Sharon shows the intermediate option but does add power to many of her moves. I think a lot of the segments (the step segments come to mind) can definitely be advanced when you follow those mods. The kickboxing and boxing are not as intense but still a good w/o IMO.

Sharon has a nice energy and demeanor. I like her as a lead in this dvd. She is a pretty good cuer and I wasn't lost in any of the moves. The moves are not dancy, more athletic and straight forward. I had no trouble with any of the moves. Its a fast paced w/o that burns a lot of calories for me.

The FIRM Sculpt-ilates Review

The FIRM Sculpt-ilates
Robyn Johnson, 2008

This is a standing and mat pilates routine done Firm style. So you use a band and do some light strength work. The dvd comes with a band, but its ligher resistance so I used a heavier band to up the strength work. The dvd is 51 minutes and is divided up into 2 main segments: Standing, & Mat pilates work. The standing work is 21 minutes, the mat work is 30 minutes and includes a cooldown stretch.
Robyn works out in the hardwood floor, fogged window room with 2 background exercisers. Kelsie provides the beginner modifications. There is some bad camera work in this. The camera isnt always focusing on what/who it should be. But Robyn is a good lead and cues well. She says "beginners follow Kelt-zee" about 5 million times-that, I could have done w/out.

The standing work starts with a warmup and moves into traditional and some nontraditional standing pilates moves. A screen comes up and says "Band Sculpt" and you move into standing pilates work using the band. You do some pliets, rows, overhead tricep extensions with the band, some twisting moves for your waist, some balance work, etc.

Then a "Mat Work" screen comes up and you move onto the ground for an interesting side plank series, mermaid, bicep curls with the band, a rolldown move, and soem other core work.

Next is the "Lower Body Mat" segment and you do lower body work on the floor with and without the band some leg circles, bridge w/ the band acting like a "seat belt" and some lower back swimming type moves.
The final section is "Core Work & Cooldown" and includes a final stretch. You start with a "classic pilates 5" move and move onto other floor core work and a cooldown stretch.

I am not a big pilates fan so I like that this is done Firm style and is more athletic. I think this is an low intermediate workout that a beginner could also enjoy. I dont think a hardcore pilates person would probably care for it though

Workout: One on One Training with Jackie Review

Workout: One-On-One Training with Jackie
Jackie Warner, 2008

This dvd has three 20 minute workouts on it: Upper Body (plus cardio), Lower Body(plus cardio), and Abs/ Core (plus cardio). Jackie works out with her crew of trainers from her TV show Workout in a nice open set with hardwood floors. In the UB & LB workouts she starts with the group warming up together and then all but one trainer goes and sits in the back and Jackie and one trainer alone workout together for each set. One trainer shows beginner mods in the core w/o. You will need a variety of dumbbells for this workout.

I actually like that the other trainers go sit in the back-it gives you the "personal trainer" feel that Im sure Jackie was aiming for-since afterall, they are all PT's. In each segment they do 3 or 4 strength moves for 1 minute each and then follow it with a cardio move. A lot of the cardio moves compliment the strength moves you just did (i.e. shuffle with speedbag after working your shoulders).

Upper body: work includes: bicep curl variations, lat row variations, tricep kickbacks, pushups, pec fly, skull crushers, bench press, delt work, etc.

Lower Body: work includes: weighted and unweighted (you can add weights to up the intensity) squat and lunge variations, bridge work, lying leg scissors, kicks, etc.

Core: TOUGH (possibly the most challenging ab w/o I own) and includes: crunch and V sit variations, plank, plank twists, Mt. climbers, burpees, bicycle crunches, etc. All the cardio is athletic and straightforward.

In 20 minutes you really accomplish a LOT in these workouts!!! I really enjoy this workout and it makes a great add on to the w/o's listed above. I like Jackie's style and her cueing is good. I would rate this a high intermediate w/o. She does move fast so you can either a) use lighter than normal weights, or b) slow down the pace. I highly reccomend this w/o!
