Grilled Butternut Squash Recipe

Today's Recipe: BBQ Grail’s Grilled Butternut Squash (from the BBQ Grail Website)
Ingredients:
  • 1 butternut squash
  • 1/2 cup Filippo Berio Extra Virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, thyme, & oregano (1/3 of each)
  • 5 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped
Directions
Slice the butternut squash in half and remove the pulp and seeds from the bulb end.  Slice the squash into 1/2 slices.  Cut the bulb end slices in half.  Combine the oil, vinegar, honey and herb in a bowl and mix well.  Place the squash in a plastic zip bag and pour in the oil mixture.  Remove as much air from the bag as possible and seal it.  Place the bag in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
Heat your grill to medium hot.  Remove the squash slices from the bag, retaining as much oil mixture as possible.  Season the squash slices with a little bit of kosher salt.   Grill the slices about 5 minutes per side.  Remove squash from the grill and drizzle with oil mixture (optional- good w/out it).  Cover with foil and let rest
for 12 minutes.  Serve.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Cardio Strength 2 Review

 PeakFit Challenge: Cardio Strength 2
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 58 min C+S workout with a group of backgrounders in a large white & hardwood set. You will need dumbbells for this workout. Many modifications are shown.

The format of this workout is the same as Cardio Strength 1 but totally different exercises. The ascent is strength work, followed by the climb which is cardio, and then finishes with a 30ish second cardio peak exercise. Using heavy weights the strength work really got my heartrate up and it stayed up for the duration of this. The pace allows for pretty heavy weights but not my heaviest.

Exercises include: punches, cardio lunges, transverse lunge & row, sumo swing to OH bow & arrow, squat- weights to floor-pushup- renegade row-hop up, tuck jumps, jump rope, OH press w/ knee raise, curtsy- side lunge - front raise combo, weighted plyo lunges w/ bi curl, leap and jump shot, mt climbers-jack pushups, 180 floor touch hops, flying jacks, crocodiile plank & tri pushup combo, side lunge-stir the pot -tri kickback, and my core was hit nicely in this one.

This is a full on advanced workout- that had me drenched in sweat by the end. My muscles were worked pretty darn well and my heart was definitely worked! Great strength & cardio combos, fun moves, kickboxing and athletic cardio. Great cuing. This is one of the best in the set IMO.

PeakFit Challenge Review: PeakFit Challenge Core Dynamics Review

PeakFit Challenge: Core Dynamics
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 24 minute core workout in a roomy white/ hardwood gym with a group of exercisers. You will need a dumbbells and your PeakFit band for this workout. Modifications are shown for most exercises.

This dvd was designed to be broken up to add on to your other PeakFit workouts or can be done in whole. The workout is broken down into four 5 minute segments. The first segment is standing core work with the dumbbell, the second is floor and plank exercises, the third is floor band work, and the forth is mostly crunch variations and includes a stretch.

exercises include: dumbbell to knee pull down, windmill, side swings, halo, rocking plank, knee tuck planks, roll from a V sit into a side plank, supermans, 1 arm & 1 leg planks, scissors, crunch leg extensions, kneeling band crunches, band donkey kicks, scissors, and side plank hip drops.

I would rate this an intermediate core workout that is easy to break up or do in its entirety. I found the exercises (for the most part) unique and all were effective. Michelle does a great job as a lead. The music is good. Time flew (I did it all in one sitting). Good core workout!

I recently did the AdvoCare 24 Day Challenge and had amazing results! I lost  10.2 lbs and 9 inches Check out my before and after photos:

What I personally LOVE about the Challenge:
  • Comes with a detailed meal plan that includes real whole foods that are quick & easy. Nothing fancy or expensive. Also comes with a nice big recipe book for meal ideas.
  • It's not some combo of strange "diet pills" (which I do not advocate). Its the correct amount of nutrition your body needs when it needs it- calcium, omegas, fiber, probiotics, etc...Nothing that will make you jittery or cause any strange side effects.
  • I wasn't hungry!!! I was eating real foods (3 meals, and 3 snacks per day) and I was satisfied. I wasnt craving the sugary treats like I normally do and was able to cut out a lot of the extra salt & sugar I had been consuming and I felt fabulous!
  • Bottom line. I lost over 10 pounds and nine whole inches and I'm maintaining my loss even after the challenge has ended.

7 Weeks to 50 Pull-Ups Review:As we move further along our fitness paths, we meet a goal or conquer a challenge. In order to continue to progress, it is important to set new goals and aspire to new challenges. When it comes to my personal fitness routine, I love to follow rotations because they help me to stay accountable when I have a set plan to follow. I love P90X and Cathe’s Shock Training System – they are my go to muscle-building rotations. The common denominator in both of these workouts - Pull-ups. The pull-up is by far the most effective and efficient upper body exercise. While both of these programs have helped me to progress, they are still my weak point. But I am determined to master the pull-up which leads me to my current challenge – 7 Weeks to 50 Pull-Ups.

In the book, 7 Weeks to 50 Pull-ups, Brett Stewart shows readers how to go from performing only one of this time-honored exercise to 50 in seven short weeks. With a progressive training program, detailed instructions and minimal equipment you can improve muscular endurance, strengthen your back, arms, shoulders and core in just twenty minutes, three times a week. Broken up into three parts, the book begins with introducing the program and eliminating any excuses or fears of doing a pull-up and gets you prepared for the program. In part two, you will find the progressive training plans based on fitness level, age and gender. Part three takes the pull-up to the next level introducing different grips, alternative workouts and a maintenance plan.

The program begins with an initial pull-up test to determine how many, if any, pull-ups you can do. Armed with this number, you can select the appropriate plan for your starting level. If you are starting from scratch, the book also offers a prep program to get you ready for the Phase One and Phase Two plans. In the prep programs, you will work with assisted pull-ups, lat pulldowns, power holds and negatives to build strength for the other plans. The Phase One and Phase Two plans work with chin-ups, pull-ups and various grips and rest periods to help you progress to doing fifty pull-ups after seven weeks.

So, I am taking on the challenge. While I may not reach the goal of fifty pull-ups in seven weeks, I am determined to get stronger and conquer the pull-up. I have already progressed to four chin-ups and am well on my way to doing some pull-ups.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Dynamic Flexibility Review

PeakFit Challenge Dynamic Flexibility
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a 30 minute athletic stretch & athletic yoga workout. Michelle leads with a group of exercisers in a large white & hardwood room. You will need your PeakFit Band for this workout. This is the active recovery dvd included in the set. The workout is intended to increase balance, strength, & flexibility and includes flowing standing sequences and floor stretches.

Exercises include: a sun breath series (a faster paced athletic sun salutation series), low sumo w/ a stretch, torso rotations, chair squats w/ big arms, yoga lunges, flowing curtsy, pulsing side lunges, hip rotations, a nice warrior sequence, plank pikes, and lower body stretches using the band on the floor.

This workout is suitable for all fitness levels- everything was straight forward- no complicated poses or super stretchy stretches. This is pretty athletic in nature but does include some nicely paced yoga-esque poses. Perfect for those of us that want to get in more yoga but arent huge yogi's. Michelle does a great job of stretching the muscles with flowing dynamic sequences.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Pure Cardio Review

PeakFit Challenge: Pure Cardio
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 54  minute workout in a spacious white & hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You will not need any equipment for this workout.  A few modifications are shown.

This is a solid non-stop cardio workout that includes the base move, ascent, and climb but doesnt hit the peak- which was fine by me as it was still a great sweat inducing w/o that burned a lot of calories. The w/o is broken into four 10 min intervals consisting of two 5 minute rounds. The first round is done on one side (i.e. left) and then the second is repeated on the other (i.e. right) side.

Exercises include kickboxing and old school aerobic exercises such as: kick and punch combos, double jog, moguls, plenty of big arm movements, front to back job, shuffle to floor touch, side twists, plyo lunges, hammer throw-knee pull, heel jacks, knee up/knee strikes, hi knee jog, ski, hopping, and skaters. Includes lots of directional changes.

Michelle does a great job of including a nice mix of high & low impact exercises but combines the moves to keep it pretty high intensity. I rate this a high intermediate workout. The sequencing of the exercises makes this challenging workout doable but with no dread. Michelle is a great lead, love her energy.  There are few reps of many different types of moves & some of the changes are fast, but I still fine on my first attempt.  Fun, unique patterns. Love the addition of low impact/ high intensity moves! There is one song in this one w/ a very loud whistle that I could have lived without but otherwise I enjoyed the music quite a bit.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Pure Strength 1 Review

PeakFit Challenge Pure Strength 1
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 52 minute strength workout in a spacious white & hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You will  need dumbbells and your PeakFit bands for this workout. A few modifications are shown. While this is a strength only workout- my heart was pumping and I was sweating up a storm (it was hot but...).

I would say this is a moderately heavy weight, moderately paced workout (similar to S90 in terms of poundage and pace IMO). The workout is broken up into 5 cycles. Each cycle focuses on one body area and finishes with a total body exercise. Each body area is hit 2ce. The cycles are: Back, Chest, Arms & Shoulders, and Legs.  You repeat the same exercises on the opposite side of the body in the 2nd round.

Exercises include: spider planks, pushups, band & DB flys, plnak knee pull w/ pushups, band squats, band lunges, squat jumps, unweighted squats, lunge -dip- knee up combo, pliet & stir the pot, 1 arm tri press, 1 arm plank & tri extension, band curl, front & side raise, and reverse plank. There is no core section but some of the exercises do hit the core.

This is probably a higher intermediate workout- but is very adaptable by adjusting your poundage. I was able to use my heaviest weights with no problems. Michelle does a great job of cuing and the sequencing is superb. This is heavy on chest and back work. Great workout- I was able to heavy up and my buns and chest were sore for days!
