Tracey Mallet's Booty Barre Beginners & Beyond Review

Tracey leads this 50 minute workout in a nice open studio with 4 backgrounders. Tracey shows lower intermediate versions and one backgrounder performs beginner and one advanced modifications. The workout is broken down into a 35 min standing toning section (including w/u & c/d), and a bonus 15 min floor booty, abs, & flexibility section, and includes a separate moves tutorial. You will need light hand weights & a chair for this workout.

Standing Toning: Using a chair for balance you move through a series of flowing, ballet-esque exercises that are plenty active. Exercises include: pliet, dips, side squats, toe raise pliets, side reaches, pelvic tilts, leg sweeps, donkey kicks, wipers, balance stick, pliet hops, hip pops, leg & knee raises, leg circles, leg shoots, unique tricep combo, upper back fly, overhead pulls, preacher curls, & arm circles. Tracey does a great job of tempo changes & adding in fun active arm movements.

Bonus Floor Booty, Abs, & Flexibility: This is a nice floor routine that includes: pelvic thrusts, kneeling hip circles adding arm movement, bridge variations, frog leg extension crunches, torso twists, side planks, sit up variations, plank knee drops, snake, and ends with a stretch.

I rate this an intermediate workout done following Tracey but follow a mod for a more or less challenging workout. I LOVE that Tracey keeps it active & gets the heart rate up. You can really tell she is having fun in this and I love her energy. This workout is similar to her other booty barre workouts but provides more intensity options. These are unique workouts and combine some great movement, strengthening, lengthening, balance & flexibility work. I received this dvd to review.

P90X Review: P90X Chest, Shoulders, Triceps Review

Tony leads this 43 minute workout w/ 3 backgrounders in a gym set. You will need dumbbells and optional pushup handles, & a chair. There is a countdown timer for the workout & each exercise duration.


After a warmup & long stretch, exercises include: tons of pushup variations, side & front shoulder raise, chair dips, pike press, side tricep pushups, disc (plate or rag) shifting pushups, scarecrow wipers, overhead tri extenstion, Y press, seated tri extentions, 1 arm pushups, arm circles, weighted football throws, pushup to side plank, fly- row- press, lying cross over punches, etc. Guaranteed to burn out your muscles!


I rate this advanced because of the amount of pushups. Kind of redundant and just too many pushups for me to actually enjoy this workout. If you arent a fan of pushups this is not the workout for you, alternately if you love pushups- youll love this workout. Tony is chatty but not annoying to me- I like him, he keeps it fun and keeps the workout moving along.

P90X Review: P90X Back & Biceps Review

Tony leads this 51 minute workout in a gym set w/ 3 backgrounders, one uses bands, and one does higher rep- lighter weights, and the other does heavy weight lower reps. You will need a pull up bar or chair and bands or dumbbells for this workout.

This workout really hits the bi's & back thoroughly! I dont have a pull up bar so I just did row variations. Exercises include: chin & pull up variations, lawnmower rows & wide lawnmower rows, 21's (biceps), 1 arm cross bi curl, open carm curl, static arm curl, locomotive rows, wall sit curl, corkscrew curls, upper back fly, curl to hammer, supermans, and strip set curls (varying poundage).

Definitely advanced with heavy weights and/or a pull up bar. Tony does a great job of including a good variety of exercises to keep it interesting and hit the muscles in a new way. Encourages you to write down your stats, and is chatty. The workout moves along pretty well but he does chat a bit- which is fine if you are working hard & need the break.

P90X Chest & Back Review

Tony leads this 50 minute chest & back workout "the mother of all P90X workouts" in a  gym set w/ 3 backgrounders. One shows band options and 1 does chair pullups. You will need dumbells or bands, a pull up bar or support for a band, and optional chair & pushup bars. There is a countdown timer for the workout & each exercise duration.


This dvd is almost all pushups alternated with pullups with a few other chest & back exercises thrown in. Exercises include: push up and pull variations, rows, single arm rows, back flys and include some rest breaks. There are two rounds of 12 exercises in this w/o. 


If you dont have a pull up bar and/or arent a fan of pushups this is NOT the workout for you (for me). I dont have the bar so I subbed in various rows for the pull ups and Im not a huge fan of pushups so I didnt really enjoy this w/o at all. Its a solid workout and with a bar- definitely advanced, though Tony does a good job of providing a lot of options. Without a pullup bar its really hard to even modify these w/o's and I dont really recommend the set if you dont have a bar or good alternative.

Jen Galardi's Sweating Sexy Review

Jennifer leads this fun dancy 50 minute workout in a nice open studio style set with 2 background exercisers. You wont need any equipment for this workout and no shoes are required! This is a fun blend of body strengthening, active stretching, and flowing dance. The dvd is chaptered and you can select a segment from the menu or play all. There is also a 5 minute dance inspired warmup that will introduce you to the upcoming moves.

Using the Floor: This section is lower body focused and includes a fun little dance routine. Exercises include: floor brush, flowing squats, toe squats, knee raise w/ a toe point, hip shifts, pliets, & Jennifer adds in some fun arm movements. This is a nice combo of ballet & flowing dance.

Using the Upper Body: This fun flowing10 minute workout is core focused and performed standing. Exercises include: side to side rib & hip shifts, reaches, pulls, standing roll ups, reach over & around, spine rolls, and finishes with a routine that combines the moves you just performed.

Ready To Dance: From the play all option you get the entire 28 minute routine, when selecting the chapter you get the 18 minute breakdown- which still moves right along but includes some "teaching" with the dancing. Exercises include: kick, side toe reach, hip circles, jazz square, inverted lunges, jump & pump, body roll ups, leg sweeps, hip pushes, and 10 minutes of performing the routine (cuing is still included). Concludes with a 5 minute cooldown.

I rate this a beginner workout in terms of cardio intensity and low intermediate in terms of choreography. Fun to do and easy to catch onto. Kind of a fusion of barre & dance with strengthening and stretching interspersed. A great "feel good" workout! Jen is a superb instructor, clear & concise cuing & perfect form pointers just when you need them. This dvd works great as a solid 50 min workout or is easily broken down to add on to other w/o's. I received this dvd to review.

Willpower & Grace Mile High Review

Today's Review: Willpower & Grace Mile High

This w/o has a live class feel. Stacey works out w/ a group of exercisers in a studio at a mile high elevation (hence the title). You wont need any equipment for this workout & everyone works out barefoot. You can play all or select your w/o segment from the main menu and the dvd includes a 7 min warmup segment. The music is a nice drum beat.

Footwork: This is a 5 minute segment that warms up & strengthens your feet & prepares you for the barefoot workout to follow. Exercises include: toe raise & stretches, ankle rolls, toe gripping, and heel raises.

Cardio: This is a very unique 24 min flowing cardio workout that includes tons of good balance work. Exercises include: balance stance, cardio squat & knee raise, forward step to tree pose, double squats, floor touch squats to burpees, squat twists, pliet heel raises, cougar lunges adding an elbow strike, power knees, & balance stick. This workout has a very functional feel to it.

Flexibility & Strength: This 13 min w/o combines strengthening, flexibility, and some active stretches into an upbeat routine. Exercises include: static runners lunge, hi plank to side plank, plank w/ toe raises, reaches, folds, rag doll. Love how she combines active stretches into the strengthening moves, very functional.

I rate this an intermediate workout that is really suitable for all levels. Stacey does a fantastic job of including different levels for most all exercises. This is a REALLY unique workout- I havent done anything like it. I really enjoyed it and really like Stacey- she has a great energy, excellent cuing, and fantastic form pointers. She is someone I would love to take a live class with. I really recommend this workout- I think it can find a place in everyones workout library. I received this dvd to review.

SparkPeople 28 Day Bootcamp Review

Today's Review: SparkPeople 28 Day Bootcamp
Nichole Nichols, 2011

This dvd contains 84 minutes of workout options! Nichole leads these workouts with 2 backgrounders who provide beginner & advanced modifications for most all exercises. Nichole & crew use 1 set of lighter hand weights but I would recommend various sets. The set is a spacious living room. Most exercises are done as a base move, then she adds another component to up the intensity.

Short Cardio Sculpt: 12 minutes. This is a cardio & strength interval workout. Nichole does a base move then adds more intensity for the last few reps. Exercises include: squat w/ a lateral raise, toe taps to a plyo pliet, static lunge w/ bi curls, dip & kick, tri kick back, reverse pushup, fly & knee raise, plank, and knee pushups.

Tone & Burn: 20 min. This workout is mostly sculpt but contains some cardio as well. Exercises incldue: pivot row, box step adding a hop & balance challenge, bicep curls, overhead press w/ oblique pinch, weighted tap backs to plyo lunges, lunge pass through, side & front raises, small curtsy adding side kicks & overhead press, fly & crunch, and knee plank rows.

Short Cardio: 12 min. This is a low impact cardio routine. Exercises include: mambo, side lunge, dips, taps to ski hops to jacks, punch & kick combos, squat pulses, traveling jacks, and punch knee combos.

Total Body Challenge: 30 min. This is a kettlebell inspired strength routine that provides a nice cardio effect (w/ heavier weights). Exercises include swings, squat -picking up & setting down weights, snatches add overhead press, windmill, lunge add overhead press, wood chop, back row, side lunge & preacher curl, fly add bridge, lying tri extension add knee pull, donkey kicks, superman, & modified pushups. This is a pretty fast paced w/o & she uses light weights, amping up the poundage worked up a great sweat and provided a nice challenging workout.

I rate this a high beginner/ low intermediate workout. Nichole is a good lead, good cuing, and good energy. Lots of modification options, make this a great dvd to grow with! The dvd provides tons of options- time options, intensity options, strength & cardio options, really a dvd that you can do over & over again. Today's Tip: Choose 70% or Darker Dark Chocolate 
It's rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants. In my newest book, I recommend taking a dark chocolate escape by enjoying a few individually wrapped tasting squares of dark chocolate every day. But you can also melt some dark chocolate chunks, fold in any spices you like (from fresh grated ginger to green tea leaves, cinnamon or chili powder) and use as a dip for fresh fruit. P90X Review: P90X Cardio X Review

This is a very unique 43 min workout that combines exercises from other P90X vids (not a compilation -is all new footage). Optional equipment includes yoga blocks, chair, and mat. Tony works out w/ 3 background exercisers in a gym set. Tony provides modification options for some exercises.

You start with a warmup, then move into yoga, kempo, plyo, core work, and finish with a cooldown. Exercises include: sun salutations and vinyassas w/ various warrior poses in, lots of kick & punch combos- including some unique kickboxing type moves, skater hops, tire run, pendulum jacks, swing kicks over a chair, floor touch squats adding a hop, elbow to knee front pull down, roll back stand up, static runner (fun), superman to banana, and cooldown.

I would rate this a solid intermediate workout that is perfect for those that love variety. Its shorter than the other P90X workouts so good for days when your shorter on time. Tony is his usual chatty self but I like him & enjoy his banter. There is a music off/ Tony off option on all the P90X dvds.

Christi Taylor's Totally Cool Step 2 Review

Christi leads this 40 min step video in a nice open space w/ cute Asian art on the wall behind. Christi works out w/ 5 backgrounders, some of which provide modifications. This dvd also contains a "move master" segment where Christi shows the combo's while counting, and a 13 min yoga & 13 min pilates workout. You will only need a step bench for this workout.

Step: The music in this workout is great- fun & high energy. Christi leads you through six fun choreographed step routines. This is the perfect addition to her original Totally Cool Step and is perfect for all you steppers out there that love fun and unique choreography. Exercises include: ham curls, straddle, L's, reapeaters, slap step, twists, pony, revolve, corner stomp, marching on the step, and Christi adds fun claps and arm movements. She does a fantastic job of utilizing the space all around the step for these fun step routines.

Yoga: Led by another instructor this is a nice flowing yoga segment. Exercises include: half moon, vinyassa flow adding some unique twists, airplane, triangle, chair, and warrior variations.

Pilates: Led by another instructor this is a tough core focused pilates routine. Each exerciser works at a different intensity so you can choose your level. Exercises include:  roll over, hundre, lying windmill, pilates bike, leg circles, teaser, double leg stretch, pilates V, plank pushups, pike superman, & side planks.

You can really tell Christi is having fun in this workout- which makes it more fun for everyone. I rate the choreography in this one advanced and the intensity high intermediate- though you can easily adjust your intensity (by adding hops or keeping it low impact) to suit your needs. This is great for those that love choreographed routines. Christi is a great lead- great cuing and has a fantastic energy! I would love to take a live class with her one of these days! I received this dvd to review.

Guillermo leads this fun 40 minute kickboxing routine with 2 background exercisers (Jessica Smith is one!) in a nice open set with Asian styling. You won't need any equipment for this workout. The dvd also contains a 4 min kickboxing basics tutorial and a 10 min bonus martial arts drills segment.

Guillermo does a fantastic job of really keeping things moving along, working up a great sweat, fun but NOT complicated or boring choreo, and his cuing is excellent. Exercises include: jabs, cross, upper cut, hook, speed bags, knee pulls, front kicks, & double jab combined into a fun kickboxing routine. He adds in jacks and squat pulses to keep the heart rate up.

I rate this a solid intermediate workout that is really appropriate for most all fitness levels- add some weighted gloves to amp up the intensity, or tone it down for a lighter day. Great cuing, great pace, lots of fun and the perfect balance of fun - not boring- not complex choreo. I received this dvd to review.

This dvd has a 25 minute upper body & a 25 min lower body workout that can be combined or done separately. Jackie works out in a brick gym w/ 2 backgrounders. You will need a light set of dumbbells for these workouts.

This is a power pyramid workout; you alternate two exercises for one rep, then two, all the way up to ten reps. The pace is fast so you really do have to use light weights (Jackie rec's 5 # dumbbells). Jackie pairs biceps & chest, back & triceps, lower body & shoulders, and core/ abs.

Upper Body Workout: Super quick warmup, pushup & kneeling hammer curl, bench press & bi curl, fly & outer curl, row & overhead tricep, upright row & kickback, and straight arm lat raise & straight arm kick back. Lower Body, Shoulders, & Abs Workout: squat & front raise, deadlift & lat raise, sumo squat & military press, crunch & clam crunch, toe touch & scissor and frog crunch & reach.

This workout hits your upper body more than the lower and the ab moves are tough & lots of reps so my abs were also thoroughly worked! Jackie is an awesome lead- great cuing and lots of variety. Time really flys in this one! If you are a fan of light weight high rep workouts- this is the workout for you! She really accomplishes a lot in a short amount of time. I received this dvd to review.
