You work out, eat right and watch your calories, but you still can’t seem to shed those unwanted pounds. Sound familiar? There is some evidence that low magnesium levels can slow down growth of lean body mass (muscle and bone building) and promote an increase in body fat. Some healthcare professionals also believe that people with low magnesium tend to have high blood sugar which may affect your ability to lose weight. Dietary sources of magnesium include leafy green vegetables (like spinach), legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains.
People who are overweight or obese tend to have high-carb diets (including processed, nutrient void carbs like white rice, white bread, pasta and sweets). And one theory is that high-carb diets increase insulin release, which creates a reaction that consumes a lot of phosphorus. This could mean phosphorus in the body isn’t available to do other reactions in the body, like burn off food. This low metabolism gets mistranslated to the body as “not enough food,” which may cause us to eat more. Supporting this theory is that high levels of phosphorus in the body are linked with lower body weight. Salmon, yogurt, turkey (light meat), chicken (light meat), beef, lentils, almonds, peanuts and eggs are dietary sources of phosphorus.
Credible research suggests a link between obesity and iron deficiency. Foods rich in iron include beef liver, chicken, chickpeas, kidney beans, spinach, tomatoes, lentils, cashews, tuna, turkey, broccoli, raisins and potatoes .
We need vitamin C to absorb iron. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit, cantaloupe, spinach, bell peppers, kiwi, strawberries, mango, kale and papaya are sources of vitamin C.
Zinc may block the bad effects of obesity, like inflammation. And if you have less inflammation, you will likely have less pain and, as a result, have better workouts. Dietary sources of zinc include lamb, pumpkin seeds, grass fed beef, mushrooms, chickpeas, spinach and chicken.
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to make sure you are getting these essential nutrients to help you with weight loss.
You can also utilize spices and herbs (which are also nutrient-dense and may aid in weight loss) to make homemade meals taste especially delicious.
Here are some of these magic herbs and spices:
● Mint, great source of magnesium and may also help relieve stress (also important with weight management).
● Rosemary, may help prevent diabetes and muscle pains and spasms (great for keeping you in the gym!)
● Thyme, good source of magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

● Ginger, may help reduce blood sugar and muscle pain.
● Cayenne, contains a chemical called capsaicin, which may increase metabolism and help your body better break down fat.
So don’t look at losing weight as having to deprive yourself. Look at it from the perspective of adding delicious, fresh nutrient-dense foods that can help fuel your body for workouts, fight the bad effects of obesity and help you lose weight.
