Interview with Jessica Smith Creator of 10 Pounds Down (4-4-2011)

4201

Recently, Two Belles was fortunate to get an interview session with renowned trainer Jessica Smith. A certified wellcoach, personal trainer and fitness instructor, Jessica Smith is also a favorite trainer onExerciseTV, has been featured in many Women’s Health workouts, as well as the popular 10 Minute Solution series, and now is the creator of her newest workout series 10 Pounds Down. Jessica kindly took the time to answer some of our questions about the new workouts, future plans and her fitness career.
Inquiring minds want to know – what can you share with us about your new 10 Pounds Down Workouts?
I can tell you that a lot of hard work, love and sweat went into them! I wanted to make this series of workouts very similar to classes that you might experience with me here in Miami in person, but that you could easily do at home in the comfort (and size) of your living room. Music is also very important to me during my own workouts, but it can be very hard to find great music for exercise videos due to licensing and financial restrictions. This was the first time I worked with Deekron the “Fitness DJ” of MotionTraxx.com to make custom mixes that would keep us motivated and inspired during the workouts – and I just loved them (and I hope you guys will too!) This is also the first time I am including a meal plan option with the series, to help maximize your results, since weight loss has a LOT to do with nutrition. I worked with LA based Registered Dietitian Lauren O’Connor to create it and I really love the recipes and meal options we included.
What motivated you to create this new series?
I was trying to think of the concept I wanted to create, and since weight loss is something I am often contacted by fitness friends about, and have also struggled with on my own as well, I focused on that. I thought to myself, most women at one point or another want to lose 10 pounds, so why not create something with that focus? And even if your goal is to lose more than 10 pounds (I originally lost 40 myself), it can be so helpful to break down your larger goal into 10 pound increments, so you can celebrate your successes along the way, without getting overwhelmed before you reach the finish line. Not to mention, we see so much in the media about celebs being so super skinny and how they workout for hours and eat baby food to do it, I wanted to create a program that is realistic, not torturous, but WILL get results.
This is your first solo project. What can you tell us about the trials and tribulations associated with producing a workout series?
It was quite an eye opening experience! In the past, I have been lucky enough to work for several companies who hire me to create the workouts and then shoot them, but then I go home and they take care of all the rest. I had to wear all the hats in this role – from wardrobe stylist to editing assistant, there was a LOT more work involved here. Not to mention I personally financed them, which makes it an even bigger risk since there is no guarantee I will even be able to pay off production costs in the end.
Do you have plans for future health & fitness endeavors for the future?
Absolutely! I have a few additional projects brewing (none that I can mention yet though!) right now, and am just really enjoying what I am doing. It was a long road to get here, and I’ve been though various jobs, weight gains/losses, but now I feel like I’m so fortunate to have reached this place in my life. And I owe a big thank you to all of you for buying my DVDs and allowing me to keep doing what I am doing!
What motivated you to pursue fitness as a career? When did you get into the fitness industry?
I think I’ve always sort of wanted to do this – when I was little, I used to set my parents’ camcorder up on a tripod and record myself “exercising” to music and “teaching” my audience (and no, you can’t see the tapes LOL!) so I laugh when people ask me what I do – it’s actually exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up! I tried several different ‘careers’ out from advertising to journalism, before settling into a career in fitness.
As a fitness professional, what common myths do you still come across that you would like to dispel?
Women, please don’t be afraid of weights, and stop zoning out on treadmills! I think most of the myths I see in action are that women don’t like to lift weights for fear of ‘bulking up’ and they do only cardio to lose weight. My Total Body Tune Up Workout is exactly the type of routine I use with my female clients – cardio paced weight training w/intervals built it – and they all get great results from it. I know my body changed when I started working out like that myself.
What is on your fitness “bucket list”? What are some of your future health & fitness plans?
Oh gosh, that is a great question! I’m not too sure. Creating this series was certainly at the top of my list, so I guess its time to make a new one! Instead of a ‘bucket list’ I create a vision board for myself every year, and its posted right in front of me at my desk so I look at it every day. I’m looking at it right now, and am so grateful that almost every single item on it has come true :-)

Motion Traxx Presents: Motion Traxx Cardio Stars - Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith

New from Motion Traxx is a fabulous audio workout featuring Jessica Smith, creator of the 10 Pounds Down workout series.  Motion Traxx Tabata Coach, is a thirty-minute intense Tabata interval workout and part of their Cardio Star Series.

Motion Traxx Tabata Coach
Jessica Smith, 2012

Jessica coaches this 30 minute tabata routine. It contains six rounds and can easily be broken down into shorter workouts. The cd contains a music only option and an audio cuing only option.

Each of the six rounds contains one exercise performed 8 times. Each move is done for 20 seconds with 10 seconds of rest in between. Exercises include: plyo jacks, jump rope, hi knee run, squat jumps, plyo lunges, and Mt. climbers.

This is an advanced workout that is easily modified as you can go at your own pace. Love that you can do as many rounds as you have time & energy for or do the whole thing for a real calorie burner! As always Jessica is a superb lead with excellent cuing and a great energy! I will definitely be getting a ton of use out of this cd. I received this dvd to review.

New From Jessica Smith: Thin in 10 Weight Loss Plan DVD Review

This dvd comes packaged with Jessica Smith & Liz Neporant's new book: Thin in 10. The book & dvd combo is available on the Thin in 10 website. Keep reading for a full review of the dvd.

Review: Thin in 10
Jessica Smith, 2012

This dvd contains five 10 minute workouts. Jessica works out in a nice studio with no background exercisers but provides modification options. You will need tubing for one of the workouts. The dvds allows you to play all or select a segment.

Cardio Quickie: In this interval workout you perform 40 seconds of low intensity followed by 20 seconds high intensity. Exercises include double side step to side shuffle floor touch, swim to moderate star jacks, power walk to power jog, figure 8 scoops to skaters and then repeat the circuit.

Strength Shot: In this bodyweight only workout you perform squats, dips, plank, pushups, and supermans. Then you repeat the circuit with some added intensity. Each exercise is performed for 60 seconds.

Total Body Band: Using tubing you perform multi-muscle exercises at a cardio pace. Exercises include: dips & chest scoops, pliet & lat pull down w/ an oblique crunch, tri extension & squat, side step & overhead press, bi curl & torso twist, bicycle, and bunny hops to keep the heartrate up.

Core Conditioning: Exercises include crunch variations, plank & side plank variations, bike, sit-ups, & bird dogs. Each exercise is performed for 60 seconds.

Stretch & Destress: This seated full body stretch includes breathing exercises. Jessica does a great job of stretching out the entire body in this routine & emphasizes the importance of stretching in your workout regimen.

I rate these intermediate routines that you can easily modify up or down to suit your needs. Love the 10 minute format for days short on time or mix and match to create a longer workout. As always, Jessica is a superb lead with fabulous cuing, excellent form pointers, and unique & effective exercises to get the job done. Really enjoyed the workout! I received this dvd to review.

Review: Motion Traxx Cardio Stars - Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith

Motion Traxx Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith Review and Details

Motion Traxx, created by a fitness music expert, offers workout music specifically designed to deliver motivation and enhanced performance for runners and exercisers. Motion Traxx utilizes Action Sync technique – developed by Deekron ‘The Fitness DJ’ – to assist in maximizing fitness results. Motion Traxx also offers premium albums that feature coaching from elite fitness instructors – including Jessica Smith, Amy Dixon, Paul Katami and more – called the Cardio Star series.
Motion Traxx Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith, creator of the 10 Pounds Down workout series, is a thirty-minute intense Tabata interval workout. Tabata training takes interval training to the next level. The Tabata is structured in intervals of 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by only 10 seconds of rest. This pattern is repeated for a total of 8 cycles – or four minutes. Motion Traxx Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith is a guided audio workout that consists of ten tracks. The first two tracks are introductory with  Deekron ‘The Fitness DJ’ and Jessica Smith explaining the concepts behind the Tabata, the structure of the workout and the cues to guide you through the workout. Here, Jessica also recommends that beginners start out performing only one or two tracks while advanced exercisers can go all out and perform all six. The guided audio workout begins with a warm-up track and ends with a cool-down track. The audio workout also include two bonus tracks – a music only option and a Tabata audio timer.
Motion Traxx Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith is a begins with an audio guided warm-up before delving into the heart of the workout. Each track consists of one four minute Tabata interval. Jessica Smith guides you through each track with motivational cues. Deekron ‘The Fitness DJ’  cues you to get you started, counts you down at the end of each Tabata drill and lets you know once you’ve finished that track. The exercises in the audio workout include plyometric jumping jacks, jumping rope, high knee runs, squat jumps, lunge switch jumps, mountain climbers. Each track consists of the one exercise performed for twenty seconds followed by the ten second rest for eight rounds or a total of four minutes.
Motion Traxx Tabata Coach with Jessica Smith is a tough interval workout. The exercises are athletic in nature and easy to follow so that you can concentrate on giving it your all for the work interval. The workout is adaptable in that you decide which track you want to do, and how many, giving you the ability to customize your workout based on your fitness level, preferences or time available to workout. Jessica Smith, as usual, does an excellent job keeping you motivated and guiding you through the workout. Though I am familiar with audio guided workouts, this is my first introduction to MotionTraxx workouts. They are a great option for travel and taking your workouts on-the-go.

Review: Thin in 10 Workout DVD

Transform your body and your life in as little as ten minutes a day with the latest book and DVD from Jessica Smith, creator of 10 Pounds Down and, award-winning fitness writer, Liz Neporent!
Best-selling exercise DVD star and certified fitness and lifestyle expert Jessica Smith along  with award-winning health and fitness writer Liz Neporent bring you this book and DVD combo and break down weight loss into 10-minute, easy-to-follow workouts that will fit even the busiest of schedules. The book includes step-by-step photos and instructions, along with an exciting, fast-paced DVD with five 10-minute workouts. Jessica Smith leads this fifty minute workout alone, without any background exercisers. The DVD consists of five ten minute workouts. From the main menu, you have the option to select any of the ten-minute segments. There is also a play all option so you can do the workout in its entirety. Jessica recommends doing two to three segments per day for best results. Or you can play the entire workout for days when time allows. Limited equipment is needed for the workout – making it an excellent travel companion. For the workout you will need a resistance band or tubing for the Total Body Band segment. An optional mat may be used for the Core Conditioning and/or the Stretch and De-Stress segment depending on your workout surface.
The Thin in 10 DVD includes five targeted routines designed to help speed up your weight loss:
  • CARDIO QUICKIE - is a ten-minute cardiovascular workout that alternates bouts of high intensity intervals with lower intensity exercise. Each cycle begins with forty seconds of low intensity cardio followed by twenty seconds of high intensity work. Each cycle is performed twice before the next exercise is introduced.
  • STRENGTH SHOT - is a body weight only resistance workout. The routine is made up of timed body-weight exercises for sixty seconds. The circuit consists of five exercises performed for sixty seconds. The circuit is then repeated with balance challenges and intensifiers added for second go-round.
  • TOTAL BODY BAND – is the second resistance workout on the DVD. This workout incorporates the use of a resistance band or tubing, however the workout can be performed using body weight only or light dumbbells. The exercises in this segment are performed for one to two minutes depending on the body part being worked (i.e. larger muscle groups are worked longer)
  • CORE CONDITIONING - is a targeted core routine designed to engage the midsection, glutes and back. Jessica uses a variety of movements from crunches to plans to engage the body’s powerhouse.
  • STRETCH & DE-STRESS - no workout would be complete without a flexibility routine. Jessica convincingly stresses the importance of this section – I almost skipped it but she talked me out of it ;) . Through the use of focused breathing and stretching the routine serves to relax the body, reduce stress, alleviate tension and stretch out the muscles.
The Thin In 10 Weight-Loss Plan proves once and for all that not having enough time is no longer an excuse to not get in a workout. Getting fit, feeling good, and losing weight doesnʼt have to mean laboring for hours in a gym or spending hundreds of dollars on bulky high-tech equipment. And the ability to customize this workout, choose a ten minute workout or string the five segments together makes this a workout extremely versatile and one you can grow with or adjust to meet your needs or preferences. Jessica Smith is an excellent instructor. She does a fabulous job leading the workout, demonstrating the exercises and offering motivation.  She is always cheerful, provides motivation, cues well and offers form pointers.

I rate these workouts intermediate but are appropriate for most all fitness levels. Both instructors do a fantastic job w/ form pointers & their cuing is spot on. Tons of variety & time options and so many unique and fun exercises! I really enjoyed all the segments & see myself using this dvd a lot. I received this dvd to review.

Today's Review: 10 Pounds Down Better Body Blast
Jessica Smith, 2011 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

This dvd has three 20-23 minute workouts, Arms, Legs, and Abs. The segments can be played together or separately from the main menu. Jessica works out alone in a studio set and you will only need dumbbells. Jessica performs a base move and then adds on to amp up the intensity. This is a lighter weight, higher rep, moderately fast paced strength workout that will get & keep your heart rate up.

Arms: Jessica performs a base move and then adds some lower body movement to up the intensity and includes some cardio intervals to get the heart pumping. Exercises include: alt shoulder raise to tri extension add lunge, bi curl add pliet & torso twist, tri kickback add side step or hop, row add balance leg raise, YTI, tri pushups, wide & narrow chest press add crunch, superman, pushups and plank to pike. UB focused cardio includes: jabs, upper cuts & speed bag jacks. Includes a short w/u & c/d.

Legs: Jessica performs a base move and then adds to it to up the intensity and includes some cardio intervals to get the keep pumping. Exercises include: dips adding floor touch w/ dumbbells, squat w/ a deadlift, side lunge adding a cross knee pull, side lunge add outer thigh raise, skater, balance reach & outer thigh raise, single leg deadlift adding a balance rear leg raise, balance glute pinches, squat jacks, weighted low lunge to plannk, jacks, lying L leg raises, & frog glute raises.Includes a short w/u & c/d.

Abs: This is a nonstop core routine that includes some active core workouts to get your heart working a bit. Exercises include: circle crunches, finger to toe cross crunches, knee drops, cross knee pull, plank hip twists, plank side knee pull, plank tap ins to plank hop ins, table top twists, V drops, cross crunch with side pinch, reverse crunches adding a twist, and finishes with plank twists. Jessica provdies tons of intensity options making this really adaptable to most fitness levels!

I rate this a solid intermediate workout. You cant heavy up much on the upper body- though I didnt need to. Using 8#'s I really felt the work and know I will be feeling it tomorrow. You can heavy up a bit more on the lower body. My heart rate was up in both segments and the cardio intervals got it up even more. REALLY like this workout and know it will get a ton of use. As always, Jessicas cuing & form pointers are spot on! I received this dvd to review.
