Q&A Session with Fitness Pro Michelle Dozois (4-18-2011)

The Belles recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of our favorite instructors- Michelle Dozois!!! Michelle is an internationally recognized fitness expert, award-winning athlete, and creator of multiple top-selling DVDs, Michelle Dozois has been helping people lose weight, get fit and lead healthier lives for over 15 years. Her contagious energy and unique, effective programming have helped her sell in excess of 4 million DVDs such as Pilates for Dummies, Prevention’s Walk your Way Slim, Dance off the inches, the Original 10 Minute Solution series and her own award winning brand “Your Body Breakthru” and many more!!! I absolutely love Michelle’s The Ultimate Workout, Peak 10 Cardio Strength, and MORE! Michelle has created so many wonderful fitness DVDs, that no matter your fitness level or style preference, she has something for YOU!
~Interview~

Belles: The at-home fitness world is anxiously awaiting your new Peak Fit Challenge- what can you share with us about this set?
Michelle: The DVD set is not only made up of my signature high intensity or “Peak” workouts, but also includes workouts to round out your training.  It has everything your body needs to be strong, lean and flexible because high intensity training isn’t meant to be done every day. As a busy mom of two active children, I wanted to create a series that really spoke to me at this time in my life.  Like so many others, I am in the trenches juggling work, family, kids’ activities and my own piece of mind.   The higher intensity workouts are great for me not only from a physical state but even more from a mental state.  I feel more grounded after my workouts and my mood is always lifted.  I also love the energy I feel with these workouts.  I feel my stamina and strength is equal to when I was a competitive aerobics champion.
Belles: We saw on your blog that the Peak Fit Challenge isn’t offered to everyone at your gym, is Peak Fit Challenge designed for advanced exercisers or can it be adapted to all fitness levels.
Michelle: “Peak fit challenge” was an off spring of our health club’s other weight loss program called “Lose 2 Win”.  We created the “Lose 2 Win” program so new exercisers or those with a significant amount of weight to lose would feel comfortable exercising in a gym environment and have the ability to meet others with like minded goals.  We use small group personal training with that program so we can easily adapt the exercises for a variety of fitness levels or special areas of concern. Originally we would not allow people to participate in “Lose 2 Win” unless they had at least 20 lbs to lose.    People were getting great results and my more experienced exercisers were wishing we had something for them.  So “Peak Fit Challenge” was born to take the already “fit” crowd with less than 20 lbs to lose to a new level.  We require everyone who participates in “Peak” to be free of injury and comfortable doing full body weight movements.  Because the workouts are all preset and move quickly to music we can’t take time out to give as many modifications.  With that said, many people with some limitations do participate but they are screened so we know they understand their bodies’ limitations and how to modify some of the movements.  For example we had a long time exerciser who recently underwent a full hip replacement.  Not your typical person I would recommend this type of exercise program to but she had years of experience with trainers and was a former athlete.  She knew what exercises she needed to modify and just did her best.  She got great results and even though she couldn’t do all the movements, she worked around her limitations and as a result now feels so much more confident and vibrant even after her hip replacement.
Belles: You are a busy wife, mother, and career woman how do you balance it all? What prioritizing tips can you share to help us to fit in our workouts?
Michelle: Honestly I am constantly learning to balance life and it is very challenging.  Thankfully, I have a husband to share life with who is also very busy and we do our best to ground each other.  There are always times I feel like I can do things better.  Sometimes I wish I could volunteer more at my kids’ school or I feel myself getting short with my children when I am tired or over loaded.  Phil and I are always reassessing how we can do things better.  I just started reading, “The 3 Big Questions for a Frantic Family” by Patrick Lencioni so I also read and look out for helpful tips from others.  Right now I am focusing on when I am home from work to NOT to answer the phone or check email so I can really be with my children.  I do wake up early as it is the only real free time I have and I tend to get more things done before my kids wake up.    In general, to prioritize I believe exercising first thing in the morning is best if at all possible.  The day just brings us so many reasons NOT to exercise.  Also come up with a minimum bottom line for your weekly workouts.  Maybe that is completing a minimum of three 30 minutes workouts per week or sneaking in 10 minute bouts on a regular basis.  Just be true to your bottom line and don’t let yourself slip.  If you do, pick yourself up and get back on it.  Anything is better than nothing and everything does count.  We as parents and caregivers need to set examples for our children.  Taking care of our bodies and our personal health is the best thing we can do for everyone around us.  I also tell people to make “appointments” for exercise and keep “your” appointment just like you keep other appointments.  You don’t have to tell everyone what you are doing, just carve out the time and don’t find excuses to skip your personal “appointment”.  Another thing I stress to our health club members is to choose activities that feel right for them now but also be open to try new things as they move through time.  There was a long time where I only focused on Pilates.  My son had just been diagnosed with Autism and I was pregnant with our daughter at that time.  Pilates spoke to me and gave my body and mind what it needed to keep going.  I studied and practiced Pilates very intensely for years and still find it a great form of exercise.  I am sure I will revisit this area again in the near future.
Belles: We all have unique stresses and challenges in our lives- do you feel that exercising helps to ease those stresses?
Michelle: OMG yes yes yes – exercise is absolutely my number one stress reducer.  I honestly don’t know how I would have coped with some of my personal challenges throughout my life.  I know from the outside it may seem like life is easy for all of us “fitness professionals” but really we face the same challenges everyone else does.  Connecting with others on a daily basis keeps me motivated and inspired.  I love stories of personal challenges and seeing how people can overcome them.  I am honored to be able to be an instrument to help others.
Belles: What got you interested in creating fitness DVDs for the at home exerciser?
Michelle: Well honestly I fell into fitness DVDs when a popular DVD instructor injured her foot 2 days before a shoot.  A friend of mine recommended me and I was asked to audition.  I wound up getting the job.  I was so nervous, scared and excited and had to learn so much material in a short amount of time plus learn all the ins and outs of teaching to camera.  It was an overwhelming experience.  I dabbled in it here and there but after I had children, I became more serious about the home exerciser as I became one myself.  In the early years of my son’s diagnosis, we had to work in 40 hours of therapy a week for him.  That and a brand new baby, and trying to find time for fitness forced me to exercise at home.  My first real home workout I did was Bryan Kest’s, “Power Yoga” series.  I would sneak in workouts when I could and the yoga workouts were a great way for me to exercise and not wake my children up from their “naps”.  This motivated me to start focusing on the home workout crowd.  I was used to serious workouts at the gym and wanted to create those same gym style workouts for home exercisers because I realized not everyone CAN get to the gym.    To this day, I test and create every workout I have ever taught on camera or at the gym in my living room.  If I can’t do it next to my coffee table it doesn’t make it on film.
Belles: Recently there’s been quite a buzz about HIIT -what are your thoughts on HIIT?
Michelle: Well based on my “Peak Fit Challenge” DVD series, I love it!  I read all the research on it, the “athlete” in me loved the intensity, so then I put a program together and tested it at our health club.  The results were amazing and the program is still running strong and selling out every time we offer it.  We are now on our 5th round of the “Peak Fit Challenge” at our club.
Thank you SO much Michelle for taking the time to share your insights & knowledge with us and our readers!!!! Check out Michelle Dozois Fitness on Facebook, Michelle Dozois on Twitter, and herwebsite for more information about her and her new Peak Fit series!

REVIEW: Michelle Dozois BodyFit 360

BodyFit 360
Michelle Dozois, 2013

This 54 minute fusion workout is inspired by pilates, ballet, yoga, dance, plyometrics and really hits the core! Michelle leads this very unique workout in an open room w/ 6 backgrounders, providing modifications. You wont need any equipment and they work out barefoot.

Exercises include: chair pose, jumping, side to side hops, side bend side lunges adding hops, plank hops, burpee pliet hops, rib shifts, curtsy balance side knee raises, reverse plank crab series, pendulum hops & lunge, warrior lunge series, back roll, push up to warrior, tricep yoga push ups, low back extensions, and down & up dog.

I rate this a low advanced workout. The pace is nonstop and Michelle wastes no time. Very unique and super fun, not so dancy and pretty straight forward choreo made this a winner for me. I literally have nothing like it in my extensive dvd collection. As always, Michelle is a superb instructor! I received this dvd to review.

Michelle Dozois Peak 10 More Cardio Strength Review

Review: Peak 10 More Cardio Strength
Michelle Dozois, 2011 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

This is a 57 min chaptered nonstop cardio & strength interval workout. Michelle works you through basecamp, ascent, climb, and finally you max out in the peak phase. The basecamp & ascent are strength moves & the climb & max are cardio. You will need dumbbells for this workout. Michelle works out w/ 6 b/g exercisers and modifications are shown.

There is no warmup in this but the 10 first block doesnt contain peaks.

Exercises include: dip-clean & press, side lunge & row, hi knees, double jogs, burpee gorilla crawls, side plank hip drops, pushups, tri pushups, plyo lunge & bi curl, 180 squat touch downs, shuffle & seal jacks, side lunge & diagonal raise, KB swing & hop, side plank thrusts, plank & 1 arm fly, curtsy diagonal raise, dive bomb pushups, fast side to side tuck jumps, plank donkey kicks, side knee tuck jumps, and a cooldown.

I rate this an advanced workout! I was dripping with sweat by the end. Michelle moves nonstop from exercise to exercise and most of the strength work got or kept my heart rate up. Lots of great functional core work and lots of combo moves. Love the workout & the format. Michelle is an excellent lead, great cuing & form pointers. I received this dvd to review.

Michelle Dozois' Peak 10 - More Cardio Interval Burn Review

Peak 10 - More Cardio Interval Burn
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a (chaptered) 61 minute nonstop cardio workout. Michelle leads in a spacious white/ hardwood room with 6 background exercisers. You wont need any equipment for this workout and some modifications are shown. The workout structure starts with a basecamp move, move into ascent and then climb and finish with almost 30 seconds of peak intensity. You perform five 10 minute intervals for two rounds each (a total of 10 peaks).

After a warmup, Exercises include: Switch jump & knee pulls, side thrust burpees, double knee step hops, cross punches, running, jab & knee up, speed bag move up, jacks, 180 jumps, air jacks, cross knee pull, soccer drill, tire run, leap & jump shot, torso twist knee up, plank moguls, tuck jump to burpees, plyo squat floor touches & lunge back, double jacks, football run, front kick & hitch kick, double jog, hi knees, 180 & tuck jumps, floor touch plyo lunges & pendulums and concludes with a cooldown.

This is an advanced non-stop cardio workout! If you liked the original Peak 10 Cardio Interval Burn- you will love this one! The transitions are quick and there are a lot of different exercises so the choreo is a bit trickier than the other Peak 10's, though I would not say it was by any means complex. LOVE that Michelle gets some great standing core work in. Michelle is a great lead with a great energy. I love the format of these workouts and the time really flys by! No dread for such a tough workout! I received this dvd to review.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Cardio Strength 1 Review

PeakFit Challenge: Cardio Strength One
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a 59 minute strength & cardio workout led by Michelle w/ a group of background exercisers ( The set is a nice room with hardwood floors & white walls. You will need a variety of dumbbells for this workout.

The workout is set up in 10 minute circuits. You start with level 1 - strength training, and then move to level 2 - where you incorporate some compond moves into your strength moves. Level 3 is cardio and its no "walk in the park" easy cardio. Then you perform level 4- which is all out, anaerobic cardio. She concludes the workout with a cooldown stretch.

The workout jumps right in- no wasted time here! Some of the strength work (levels 1 & 2) def had a functional feel and some seemed kettlebell inspired. There were a lot of compounds moves (level 2) so you are moving and working throughout the entire hour. Some of the strength moves include: deadlifts into a bicep curl, pushups into plank knee pulls, pliets w/ UB work, squat to the floor w/ a shoulder raise, and I felt my core being worked throughout each strength set.

Level 3
cardio moves included: shuffle jump, various kick and punch combos, jumping jacks, high knees, skiiers, etc. The level 3 cardio is not what I would consider easy at all and is followed by 15 seconds of even more intense cardio!

Level 4
cardio moves include tuck jumps, flying jumps, ground touch-jump, crab crawl jumps, and more heart pounding explosive moves. Level 4 only lasts 15 seconds so its very do-able! And is followed by another level 1 strength set, which allows your to recover.

This workout is def advanced but is SO very doable because of the way Michelle has structured the work. This workout really really strengthens your heart- training it to not only get up there but to come back down. I LOVE a challenging workout and I love that this one flows so well and the time just flew by. At 30 minutes into the workout I was still going very strong. I didnt lose any steam until the very last circuit, but was still able to finish strong. That says alot to the sequencing of this workout and I am impressed! Can not wait to try others in this series. Michelles cueing is spot on and all the moves are athletic and easy to catch onto.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Pure Strength 2 Review

PeakFit Challenge Pure Strength 2
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a 52 minute strength workout- the lower body portion did get my heart rate up though. Michelle leads in a spacious white & wood room with a group of background exercisers. You will need your PeakFit band and dumbbells for this workout. Some exercise modifications are offered.

This workout is structured exactly the same as the 1st strength w/o in the set and  is a moderately heavy weight, moderately paced workout (similar to S90 in terms of poundage and pace IMO). The workout is broken up into 5 cycles. Each cycle focuses on one body area and finishes with a total body exercise. Each body area is hit 2ce. The cycles are: Back, Chest, Arms & Shoulders, and Legs.  You repeat the same exercises on the opposite side of the body in the 2nd round.

Exercises include: kneeling band pec fly, kneeling chest scoop, a unique runners arm move, band bent row, dead bug band pulldown, pulsing lunges w/ a glute raise, pushup variations, squat variations, squat & windmill, front & lateral raise, band curl, and a curtsy-set down & pick up weights. There is no core section but a few of the exercises do hit the core.

I rate this high intermediate- but easily adaptable by adjusting your poundage. This is a very solid workout that is chest & back heavy. The lower body section is short but you can easily heavy up and hit the lower body hard. The bi's, tri's, and shoulders werent worked as much IMO. Michelle is a great lead, good cuing, and the sequencing of this workout (as with all in this set) are superb.

PeakFit Challenge Review:Cardio Interval Burn Review

PeakFit Challenge Cardio Interval Burn
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a 65 minute mostly kickboxing cardio workout. Michelle leads in a spacious white/ hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You wont need any equipment for this workout. Some modifications are shown.

The workout is structured that you start with a basecamp move, move into ascent and then climb and finish with almost 30 seconds of peak intensity. You perform five 10 minute intervals for two rounds each (a total of 10 peaks). The majority of the exercises are kickboxing inspired and Michelle does a great job of blending high and low impact into this heart pumping workout.

Exercises include: lots of good punch & kick combos (nothing complicated though), hi tuck jumps, triple run, shuffle, hitch kcks, torso twist, double step touch to floor touch, hi knee fence hoppers, skaters, jacks, scissors, bob & weave, bang the drum w/ a hop, hi knee run, sprints, and pendulum jacks.

I rate this a low advanced or very high intermediate cardio workout. The sequencing of the exercises building in intensity allows you to keep going for the duration in this workout. My heart rate stayed high the entire time but I didnt get what I would consider anaerobic at any point. A great challenging but do-able cardio workout. Not for beginners, thats for sure! Michelle does a fantastic job in this one- and all the exercises were easy to catch onto but not boring at all.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Cardio Strength 2 Review

 PeakFit Challenge: Cardio Strength 2
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 58 min C+S workout with a group of backgrounders in a large white & hardwood set. You will need dumbbells for this workout. Many modifications are shown.

The format of this workout is the same as Cardio Strength 1 but totally different exercises. The ascent is strength work, followed by the climb which is cardio, and then finishes with a 30ish second cardio peak exercise. Using heavy weights the strength work really got my heartrate up and it stayed up for the duration of this. The pace allows for pretty heavy weights but not my heaviest.

Exercises include: punches, cardio lunges, transverse lunge & row, sumo swing to OH bow & arrow, squat- weights to floor-pushup- renegade row-hop up, tuck jumps, jump rope, OH press w/ knee raise, curtsy- side lunge - front raise combo, weighted plyo lunges w/ bi curl, leap and jump shot, mt climbers-jack pushups, 180 floor touch hops, flying jacks, crocodiile plank & tri pushup combo, side lunge-stir the pot -tri kickback, and my core was hit nicely in this one.

This is a full on advanced workout- that had me drenched in sweat by the end. My muscles were worked pretty darn well and my heart was definitely worked! Great strength & cardio combos, fun moves, kickboxing and athletic cardio. Great cuing. This is one of the best in the set IMO.

PeakFit Challenge Review: PeakFit Challenge Core Dynamics Review

PeakFit Challenge: Core Dynamics
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 24 minute core workout in a roomy white/ hardwood gym with a group of exercisers. You will need a dumbbells and your PeakFit band for this workout. Modifications are shown for most exercises.

This dvd was designed to be broken up to add on to your other PeakFit workouts or can be done in whole. The workout is broken down into four 5 minute segments. The first segment is standing core work with the dumbbell, the second is floor and plank exercises, the third is floor band work, and the forth is mostly crunch variations and includes a stretch.

exercises include: dumbbell to knee pull down, windmill, side swings, halo, rocking plank, knee tuck planks, roll from a V sit into a side plank, supermans, 1 arm & 1 leg planks, scissors, crunch leg extensions, kneeling band crunches, band donkey kicks, scissors, and side plank hip drops.

I would rate this an intermediate core workout that is easy to break up or do in its entirety. I found the exercises (for the most part) unique and all were effective. Michelle does a great job as a lead. The music is good. Time flew (I did it all in one sitting). Good core workout!

PeakFit Challenge Review: Dynamic Flexibility Review

PeakFit Challenge Dynamic Flexibility
Michelle Dozois, 2011

This is a 30 minute athletic stretch & athletic yoga workout. Michelle leads with a group of exercisers in a large white & hardwood room. You will need your PeakFit Band for this workout. This is the active recovery dvd included in the set. The workout is intended to increase balance, strength, & flexibility and includes flowing standing sequences and floor stretches.

Exercises include: a sun breath series (a faster paced athletic sun salutation series), low sumo w/ a stretch, torso rotations, chair squats w/ big arms, yoga lunges, flowing curtsy, pulsing side lunges, hip rotations, a nice warrior sequence, plank pikes, and lower body stretches using the band on the floor.

This workout is suitable for all fitness levels- everything was straight forward- no complicated poses or super stretchy stretches. This is pretty athletic in nature but does include some nicely paced yoga-esque poses. Perfect for those of us that want to get in more yoga but arent huge yogi's. Michelle does a great job of stretching the muscles with flowing dynamic sequences.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Pure Cardio Review

PeakFit Challenge: Pure Cardio
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 54  minute workout in a spacious white & hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You will not need any equipment for this workout.  A few modifications are shown.

This is a solid non-stop cardio workout that includes the base move, ascent, and climb but doesnt hit the peak- which was fine by me as it was still a great sweat inducing w/o that burned a lot of calories. The w/o is broken into four 10 min intervals consisting of two 5 minute rounds. The first round is done on one side (i.e. left) and then the second is repeated on the other (i.e. right) side.

Exercises include kickboxing and old school aerobic exercises such as: kick and punch combos, double jog, moguls, plenty of big arm movements, front to back job, shuffle to floor touch, side twists, plyo lunges, hammer throw-knee pull, heel jacks, knee up/knee strikes, hi knee jog, ski, hopping, and skaters. Includes lots of directional changes.

Michelle does a great job of including a nice mix of high & low impact exercises but combines the moves to keep it pretty high intensity. I rate this a high intermediate workout. The sequencing of the exercises makes this challenging workout doable but with no dread. Michelle is a great lead, love her energy.  There are few reps of many different types of moves & some of the changes are fast, but I still fine on my first attempt.  Fun, unique patterns. Love the addition of low impact/ high intensity moves! There is one song in this one w/ a very loud whistle that I could have lived without but otherwise I enjoyed the music quite a bit.

PeakFit Challenge Review: Pure Strength 1 Review

PeakFit Challenge Pure Strength 1
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 52 minute strength workout in a spacious white & hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You will  need dumbbells and your PeakFit bands for this workout. A few modifications are shown. While this is a strength only workout- my heart was pumping and I was sweating up a storm (it was hot but...).

I would say this is a moderately heavy weight, moderately paced workout (similar to S90 in terms of poundage and pace IMO).

Exercises include: spider planks, pushups, band & DB flys, plnak knee pull w/ pushups, band squats, band lunges, squat jumps, unweighted squats, lunge -dip- knee up combo, pliet & stir the pot, 1 arm tri press, 1 arm plank & tri extension, band curl, front & side raise, and reverse plank. There is no core section but some of the exercises do hit the core.

This is probably a higher intermediate workout- but is very adaptable by adjusting your poundage. I was able to use my heaviest weights with no problems. Michelle does a great job of cuing and the sequencing is superb. This is heavy on chest and back work. Great workout- I was able to heavy up and my buns and chest were sore for days!

PeakFit Challenge: Anywhere, Anytime, No Excuse Workout
Michelle Dozois, 2011

Michelle leads this 45 minute workout in a wide open white & hardwood room with a group of background exercisers. You will not need any equipment for this workout. It is mostly sports drills (cardio) but includes some body weight resistance work. A few modifications are shown.

This ascent metabolic training workout is structured so that the intensity of the exercises climb and peak with a 30 second blast. You perform each circuit twice in 5 minutes. There is a countdown timer that tells you where youre at in the workout and each circuit. Cant wait to try the rest of the dvds in the set!

Michelle Dozois: The Ultimate Workout DVD Review

The Ultimate Workout
Michelle Dozois, 2009

This dvd offers two 30 minute workouts (one cardio and one strength) and a 15 min flexibility. Michelle works out with 2 background exercisers (one offering beginner mods) in a nice, bright, open set. Optional equipment includes: dumbbells, a high step, and gliding discs and Michelle offers no equipment modifications throughout. You can play all or select any section from the chaptered menu.

Ultimate Cardio Blast: After a fun warmup exercises include: bob & weave w/ punches, fast feet to pushups, knee pulls, jump ropes, pulsing lunge hops, quick-quick-slow hops, shuffle hops, ski jumps w/ a speed bag, jacks to plyo jacks, and flying jacks.  This is one of my favorite floor cardio routines- not boring or repetitive. Fun, high energy, and sweaty! Easy to modify up or down.

Ultimate Super Sculpting: After a quick active warmup, exercises includes: kettlebell swings, deadlift variations w/ lat row, 1 legged bridge, disc planks w/ knee pulls, bicep curls w/ hover squats, weighted tri dips, a thorough tricep series, disc pliets, disc lunges, step up (onto your high step) with an overhead press, low side lunges into weighted 1/2 moon, a tough pushup segment, low back work utilizing the discs, and ab work.  Love the multi muscle exercises. New fun combos w/out being overly complicated or awkward. Love the gliding disc work- adds in unique challenges.

Ultimate Flexibility: This is a seated, lying, and standing flexibilty stretch that utilizes a towel to enhance your stretches. Great to add on to one of the other workouts!

I would rate this dvd a solid to high intermediate that really accomplishes a lot in each segment. Michelle created this dvd to allow us to fit it all in: cardio, strength, and flexibility! It also allows us to customize our workout time & focus. Michelle is an EXCELLENT lead- great energy, great pace (no wasted time but not rushed), excellent cuing & form pointers! I received this dvd to review.

Michelle Dozois Peak 10 Cardio Strength Review

Review: Peak 10 Cardio Strength
Michelle Dozois, 2010

This is a 59 minute strength & cardio workout led by Michelle w/ 6 background exercisers (male & female). The set is a nice room with hardwood floors, white walls & windows in the background. You will need a variety of dumbbells for this workout- she recomends 2 sets, 5 -20 lbs.

I received a sample of this product to review. I was in no other way compensated for my honest review. All thoughts and ideas expressed are my own.
